Mountain bike packs: Gregory Endo & Avos

Reinventing the wheel

GREGORY is ploughing its 40+ years of backpack experience into the world of two wheels for the first time. With the mountain bike packs Endo (for men) and Avos (for women) the pack specialists from the USA are revolutionising bike packs. Their RS (Ride Stability) suspension allows back length to be adjusted by shifting the hipbelt up or down. This brings a whole new level of customisability. And of course, the packs have all the bike features you’d expect inside, plus an integrated hydration reservoir. Endo and Avos are available in a 10 litre and 15 litre version.

Solid fit, high ventilation, energy conservation and more fun riding – that was what the designers at GREGORY set out to achieve. Because biking places different demands on a pack than say, hiking, they came up with a new solution: Instead of adjusting the shoulder straps, the Shift RS (Ride Stability) system lets you shift the hipbelt up or down to adjust the back length and load position. So riders can position the pack exactly where they want, according to the terrain and their riding style. The suspension with tensioned mesh back panel lets air circulate between the pack and the back, but has a small enough gap to keep the load close. The EVAP moisture wicking technology wicks moisture away from the back for cooler, drier trail performance.

And the partitioning and features are also bike-specific: There are dedicated compartments and sleeves to stash spare tubes and a pump. A no-bounce, removable storage pocket within the main compartment protects tools. A padded pocket shields valuable contents from impact. The QuickStow system on the shoulder harness keeps sunglasses secure and easy to access. Pockets on both sides of the hipbelt are sized to accommodate a mobile phone or energy bar, and there’s a bike light attachment loop on the back of the pack. A stretch mesh stuff pocket on the front provides quick access to an extra layer. Moulded webbing keepers keep straps quiet and out of your way on the trail and the zipper pulls are ergonomically shaped. Gregory has built the pack from 210D Cryptorip nylon, an extremely durable and tear-resistant pack fabric.

The 3D Hydro system comes built into the Endo and Avos packs. An integrated drying hanger keeps the two walls of the reservoir apart after washing. The bite valve is magnetic for easy, one-handed attachment to the sternum strap. The SpeedClip allows snap-and-go reservoir installation. An extra-wide fill opening and a hook to hang it up by when drying are further user-friendly features.

The Endo is available in a 10 and 15 litre version in colours Carbon Black and Horizon Blue, and the Avos in the same sizes and the colour Riviera Blue.
